Solid Ground

Solid Ground is a UConn Extension program created to support new and beginning farmers as they start, grow, and sustain successful farm businesses. Farming today requires more than production skills, it requires strong decision‑making, financial planning, and long‑term business strategy. Solid Ground provides research‑based education, practical tools, and personalized support to help farmers build a strong foundation for farm viability and resilience.

Through workshops, courses, one‑on‑one assistance, and online resources, Solid Ground helps farmers strengthen skills in farm financial management, business planning, land access, and risk management. Participants learn how to evaluate farm investments, track income and expenses, set realistic goals, and plan for growth, while navigating the unique challenges faced by beginning farmers in Connecticut and the Northeast.

Solid Ground is designed for farmers at different entry points, whether you are exploring farming as a career, launching a new operation, or working to stabilize and grow an existing farm business. Guided by UConn Extension’s land‑grant mission, the program offers practical, and farmer‑centered education, connecting participants to trusted resources, expert instructors, and a supportive learning community. Our goal is to help new farmers gain confidence, make informed decisions, and build farm businesses that are economically sustainable for the long term.

The Solid Ground program is part of UConn Extension’s Sustainable Food Systems initiative and is one offering within a broader suite of programs designed to strengthen agricultural viability, resilience, and success across Connecticut’s farming community, ultimately supporting the municipalities and residents we serve through a stronger local food system, economic vitality, and enhanced community well-being.
